THE FROGS WANTED A KING

AESOP'S FABLE AS TRANSLATED BY AMURU CALIWA

Once upon a time in a mystical land there was a hamlet in a secluded forest and in this forest there was a fresh water pond where some clusters of frogs dwell in it and its environs. These frogs spend their morning lounging by the pond and when the sun is high in the sky they take a refreshing dip in it; at night when the moon is full they gather around the pond and croak: life for the frogs was beautiful and a dream comes true. One day some of these frogs decided that they wanted a king - a heated debate broke out among which end up with a faction of frogs leaving the secluded forest in anger- they chose to leave under rock than to stay there, those that stayed did so because they wanted a king. Since they did not know how to select a ruler they decided that the best cause of action was to send an envoy to Jupiter to ask him to pick a king for them. Jupiter is the Roman name of Zeus, a sky god that hurls thunderbolts; he is the first among the immortal gods- he reign as king on Mount Olympus on the northern part of the hamlet he also presided over the divine counsel of gods. When the frogs’ envoy met Jupiter they told him about their desire for a king. After listening to the frogs’ envoy Jupiter send them back to the pond with a message that their new king he will appear that night in the pond.  Jupiter was wary of the frogs' fickle nature because- they asked him for a quiet secluded pond when he gave them one they did nothing but make noise day and night by croaking. Jupiter took a huge log that night and tossed it into the pond it landed with splash and scattered water all over the place, it frighten frogs and made them scurry into the nearby forest. Morning came and with it the return of the frogs, they all gather around the pond to see their new king: the log. The log was floating in the pond. They still fear the log so they just stood around the pond in doubt and fear, when noon came the frogs realized that their king was harmless so some of them venture into the water to take a dip. As the wheel of time moves so did life, everything returns to normal in the scenic pond in the secluded forest in the mystical land. In disdain the frogs took to sitting on their king. They complain about him to each other saying ‘he is useless and motionless- a king like him deserved nothing but disdain since he does nothing but just float around the pond from dusk to dust.”

When they had enough of their new king’s attitude they send envoy of frogs to Jupiter to asking him to change their king for them.

“We want an active king that will keep us on our toss, the log does nothing all day but float around,” they said “he is useless.”

“He is not that useless- you seat on him, that has to count as useful don’t you think?” he asked them.

“No it does not count” they replied “we are seating on him to show our contempt, we could stop seating on him to prove that he is totally useless- if you like.”  They replied.

Wary of the frogs’ constant argument he told them not to bother about proving it. “So what do you really want in a king why can’t you just pick one of you to be your king: after all that is what other animals do.” Jupiter said.

They laugh at his remark “we all agree that our king should not croak and we have not seen a frog that does not croak yet.” They replied

‘”Why do you want a frog that does not croak as your?” he ask them.

“A loud king is not just majestic.” They replied.

Jupiter concord with their logic “So what do you really want in a king?” he asked them again.

“Anything that is active,” they said “and he should be able to amuse us and keep us on your toss.”

“I think I know just the right thing that will do.” He told them and flick his hand “you can go back to the pond I have already dispatch your new king to the pond and I won’t change it if you come back.”

When the frogs’ envoy got back to the pond they saw their new king- it was a stroke as soon as the stroke land in the pond he began to eat the frogs in them. True to his words Jupiter gave them what they wanted because the stroke kept them on their toss: whenever they see him the lip away and he amused them because he never get tired of eating them.

AESOP'S FABLES

The Ass, The Fox, And The Lion
As Translated By Amiru Caliwa

Once upon a time, there were three animals, the lion, the fox, and the ass; they decided to hunt and gather food together so that they could get more. So off they went to start hunting and gathering; when they finished, they were able to get plenty food.

When it was time to share what they had caught and gathered, the lion, who was the king of animals, asked the ass to share it; without hesitation, the ass went to work. He shared everything they got equally between the three of them; when the lion saw how the ass shared the food, he was furious with the ass because he did not give him his share-the lion’s share. The lion then roared in anger “have you forgotten that I always get the lion’s share” he asked the ass furiously before the ass could answer he pounced on him and claws him to death.

You should share the food he told the fox as he was licking the blood of the ass off his claws. The fox cautiously went to work; he took the majority of the food that they had collected and hunted for together and gave it to the lion, and kept little of it for himself. The lion was happy and satisfied with the way the fox divided the food. He asks him “where did you learn how to divide things fairly” the fox ever the wise animal answered “I learned it from the ass Your Grace.”
